The calculator, the traps, and the budget worksheet in one PDF

The quote covers one clean pass
A price per character assumes your book is generated once, on one plan, in one month. Five layers sit on top of that, and none of them shows up in the quote.
Re-dos
Every passage you change after listening is billed again.
Voice and model choice
Not every voice uses credits at the standard rate.
The plan you actually need
Lower tiers can export below what stores accept.
Credits that expire
A book made over three months pays for three months.
Costs outside the tool
Store shares, ISBNs, and mastering still belong in the budget.
Measure your re-dos instead of guessing them
Produce one hard chapter to the standard you would publish, then compare what it actually used with what one clean pass should have cost. That ratio, applied to the whole book, is a better budget than any average. The workbook walks through it line by line, alongside each tool's stated rule for regenerations, rollover, and cancelling.
Budget the whole book before you buy a plan
Work out your own re-do factor, pick the plan that exports store-ready files, and see what you would lose if you cancelled.
AI audiobook cost: common questions
Short answers for authors and publishers. The workbook has the calculator, the plan terms, and the budget worksheet.
How much does an AI audiobook cost?
It depends on your word count, how many passages you regenerate, and which plan you need for store-ready files. Convert your book into the unit your tool bills in, measure your re-do rate on one chapter, then count the months of plan you will pay for. That total is usually higher than a per-character quote.
Why do AI voice credits run out before the book is finished?
A quote covers one clean pass. Regenerating a changed passage uses credits again, some voices use credits faster, and monthly allowances often expire or roll over only partly, so a book produced over several months costs several months of plan.
Do regenerations use credits?
Usually, once the text changes. ElevenLabs Studio offers up to two free regenerations only if the text, voice, and settings are unchanged. Murf charges again for changed text but not for voice-setting changes. WellSaid’s Starter and Pro plans include unlimited retakes and bill on download.
What happens to unused credits when I cancel?
It depends on the tool. ElevenLabs says unused credits are lost when a downgrade or cancellation takes effect, and Murf says remaining generation time is lost on cancel. In NarrationBox, monthly words expire each cycle, top-ups roll over until used, and your content is not deleted.
Are the free store narration options really free?
They cost no cash up front, but you pay in other ways. Amazon Virtual Voice pays a 40% royalty within a $3.99 to $14.99 price range, Google pays a 52% revenue share on auto-narrated titles, and Apple’s and Spotify’s tools have language, region, or title limits.
How many characters or hours is my book?
Multiply your word count by about 5.8 for characters, including spaces. For length, ACX says most narrators read about 9,300 words per hour, so divide your word count by 9,300 and then time a sample chapter with your chosen voice.
Is this really free?
